RECENT CHANGES TO ASWB EXAM ADMINISTRATION

The Committee encourages all test takers to review the recent changes to the exam administration, paying particular attention to Page 17 of the ASWB Exam Guidebook (https://www.aswb.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/2025-ASWB-Examination-Guidebook-Pearson-VUE.pdf).

The Examination

The exam is divided into two 85-question sections, each of which has a two-hour time limit. Questions appear on the screen one at a time, and test-takers select their answer. The software allows users to zoom in and make text appear larger. A help screen is available during the entire exam. Within each section, you may skip questions and go back to them later, mark questions for review, highlight and strike through text, and go back and change answers. After you have completed the first section, you will not be able to return to it.

Breaks

There are two types of optional breaks that you may take during your exam, a scheduled 10-minute break and unscheduled breaks.

ASWB Examination Information

On February 5, 2021 the State Committee for Social Workers received notification that their exam exception request for LMSWs, LBSWs and LCSWs has been approved. Therefore, candidates for the LBSW exam and the LMSW exam can take the exam 60 days prior to graduation. In order for this to occur the candidate needs to request a letter from a designated official at the CSWE accredited university indicating that the individual is on track to graduate in addition to submitting the application for licensure, fee and the required documentation.

Candidates for the LCSW exam can set for the exam once they have completed 2,250 hours and 18 months of supervision. In order for this to occur candidates will need to ensure their supervisor(s) have submitted an email stating the individual has completed at least 2250 hours and 18 months and is on track to finish supervision, in addition to submitting the application for licensure, fee and the required documentation.
