Licensees planning to retire from practice should be aware that Missouri does not have a "retired" or "inactive" license status. A Missouri optometry license can only have a status of "active" or "expired". In order to maintain a license in an active status, a licensee is required to obtain 32 hours of continuing education from a Board-approved sponsor during each renewal period, regardless of whether or not that licensee is actively engaged in the practice of optometry.
Licensees retiring from the active practice of optometry may request a certificate from the Missouri State Board of Optometry recognizing their years of service to the profession.
