Regulated Professions Social Workers Continuing Education
The State Committee for Social Workers recently met and addressed calculation of continuing education hours. The committee will recognize the total training time as allowable hours. Time that will not count toward continuing education includes awards, breaks and meals (unless there is a speaker). If you have any questions about calculating the clock hours available for continuing education programs feel free to contact the committee for clarification. Continuing Education Rule Amended
The State Committee for Social Workers has amended the continuing education rule. This was accomplished to clarify the requirements that licencees must meet at the time of renewal.
The new rule will take effect July 31, 2006. The new rule amendments will take effect in the midst of license renewal cycles, therefore, the following explains who will need to comply with the requirements by designated renewal dates:
Licenses that expire on September 30, 2008 and those that expire on September 30, 2009 will need to meet the requirements as outlined in the amended rule, and then at every renewal cycle thereafter.
As part of the thirty continuing education hours licensees will be required to complete three hours of ethics. In addition, the rule specifically outlines the number of hours that can be awarded for self-study courses, university or college courses, initial one-time preparation and presentation of a social work course, etc.
Also listed in the new rule are organizations that are automatically accepted as sponsors for continuing education programming (i.e. National Association of Social Workers, Association of Social Work Boards, Missouri Mental Health Counseling Association, Colleges and Universities, etc.).
Please keep in mind that continuing education hours will not be carried over into the next reporting/license renewal period, and credit will not be given for regular work activities, administrative staff meetings, case staffing or reporting, membership in or holding office in, or participation on boards or committees, business meetings of professional organizations, or training specifically related to the policies and procedures of an agency.
As a reminder, it is your responsibility to maintain records of the continuing education activities you attend. If selected for an audit you will be required to submit proof of attendance for continuing education programming.
For your convenience a copy of the new rule is attached. In the event you should have any questions related to continuing education or other matters related to licensure, please feel free to contact the committee office at 573-751-0885.
